About Us

40 Years and Counting of Community

Originally established in 1986 as the “Senior Citizens South of the River Centre”, the club was created to provide a warm and welcoming gathering place for seniors in Perth’s suburbs south of the Canning River.

Led by our first President, Axel Kruse, a dedicated cadre of volunteers and advocates worked tirelessly and tenaciously to justify, lobby and execute the vision of a community to empower seniors to live actively, contribute meaningfully, and pass on their legacy with purpose and joy.

The result: a permanent home at 2 Herald Avenue in Willetton. The Club appropriately renamed the Herald Avenue Senior Citizens Centre.

What began as a modest venue has grown into one of the busiest and most active senior facilities in the City of Canning.

Over four decades, Herald Avenue has become much more than a centre — it is a nexus; a true home away from home where lifelong friendships are formed, memories are created, and seniors enjoy active, healthy, and fulfilled lives.

This year 2026, Herald Avenue Senior Citizens Club proudly celebrates 40 years of friendship, activity, and community spirit. As we mark this special 40th anniversary, we celebrate our past with gratitude and look forward with excitement to the next chapter together.

Our Purpose

To empower seniors to live actively, contribute meaningfully, and pass on their legacy with purpose and joy.

Community Connection

To unite the senior citizens of Canning River for mutual benefit and fulfilment, creating opportunities to connect socially, engage in sports, and pursue health and wellness activities.

Shared Wisdom

We believe that retirees have a vital role to play: to take their rightful place in society, share the knowledge and wisdom gained through a lifetime of experience, and ensure it is not lost to future generations.

Lifelong Growth

As seniors, we embrace the freedom to develop hidden talents, demonstrate greater tolerance and vision, and generously guide and support younger generations with the insight that only age and experience can provide.
